To celebrate World Book Day, some staff at the Academy have shared their love of reading along with some of their favourite page-turners...

"I may be an English teacher, but I also have A levels in ancient history, sociology and human biology. I loved reading about the ancient Greeks and I still love reading about history, especially anything to do with medicine and the way civilisations were formed and structured."

"I may be an ICT teacher, but I also have A levels in physics, graphic design and IT. I loved reading about the Large Hadron Collider and I still love reading about updates in the graphic design community."

"My ultimate favourite is Billy Connelly; he’s my go-to read. I often read it on the bus to Newcastle or on the way to work. Sometimes I actually laugh out loud while reading. As my husband is a chef, I occasionally make tea. When it’s my turn, I like to read Mary Berry as she has lots of easy to follow recipes. I am about to start Stacy Solomon which was recommended by my daughter. I am looking forward to starting this one because I like Stacey as she always seems happy."

"I may be a geography teacher, but I also have A levels in English literature, history and general studies. I loved reading around each of my subjects at A level, but I particularly developed a love of reading poetry when I was studying English; my favourite poet is Philip Larkin. When I was in sixth form, I also started reading newspapers like The Guardian regularly as they helped broaden my knowledge of each of my subjects. This is something that I still enjoy today as I love reading stories about people, places and events from all over the world."

"I may be a PE teacher, but I also have A levels in history and English literature. I loved reading fictional literature so much that I studied a joint honours degree at university studying English literature and sport science. I still love reading fiction and do so every day, often moving back and forth between my favourite genre of science fiction/fantasy novels by the likes of Tolkien, Asimov, as well as more modern authors such as Brandon Sanderson, and re-reading some of the classics which I studied at school and university, such as Wuthering Heights, To Kill a Mockingbird and Catcher in the Rye. I particularly like the fact that I can read them at a more leisurely pace and actually enjoy them more now that I have a greater awareness of their narratives, implications and impact on individuals and society."
